Thank you for your interest in the Sounding Bowls.
When I first made a Sounding Bowl in 1986 it was my hope or dream to fill a gap between music and sculpture. To make something that was neither an Instrument nor yet simply Sculpture but fulfilled the role of both.
It is through those who use them that this has come to some fruition. Players on stage and in therapy use Sounding Bowls because of their looks as well as because of their sound. Therapists in many situations have found that clients who avoid identifiable musical instruments will show active interest in playing a Sounding Bowl.
It is amongst music therapists that their reputation has spread particularly widely. Sounding Bowls are making music with multiply challenged children, mentally ill adults, hospice patients, deaf and blind, locked-in sufferers and many others, in places as far apart as Japan and America, Sweden and Australia.
Every Sounding Bowl is still individually hand made, numbered and signed by myself. Many are made to order working with a specific situation and person or group in mind.
The wood for every Sounding bowl is carefully chosen for its tonal richness as well as its visual attractiveness. Particular species and particular parts of the tree, usually those that have suffered stress in their growth are chosen for their richer resonant qualities. Amazingly these are the parts that many saw mills find too tricky to handle and they would often be burnt. Yet if these sections are cut open and seasoned with special care they reveal the most wonderful grain patterns as well as releasing exceptional resonance. Here again sculpture and instrument combine in this enhanced beauty and tone of growth stressed wood.
Such attention to detail results in a level of satisfaction in users which has gained the Sounding Bowls a remarkable reputation. This reputation is backed by a life time guarantee and by my on going interest in the performance of each numbered and signed instrument.
